Cupping is a modality that can be traced back thousands of years, to ancient Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Egyptian cultures. Traditionally this practice was used for the treatment of cold’s and flu’s to help these ailments run their course more quickly as well as to help prevent lingering symptoms. This technique, using glass cups to create suction on the skin, is also beneficial for the treatment of muscle pain and tension and reducing swelling and knots. It does this by acting almost as a “reverse deep tissue massage” in that it moves blood and lymph and allows for a deep myofascial release. Typically painless, cupping is reported as feeling “unusual”, or a good pain. “Like a giant octopus is attaching itself to your back” is perhaps the best analogy.
“The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.” Hippocrates
No two acupuncture patients receive the same treatment for the same disease or discomfort. Acupuncturists treat patients, not diseases. They are trained to take in every detail of you, from the sound of your voice to the quality of your skin to the sparkle in your eyes. They care about your whole story, past and present. They see your body as a network of interdependent parts: muscle, bone, fascia, organs, blood and body fluids, as well as more subtle layers like meridians and qi. They see what is deficient and what is stuck, mentally as well as physically, and make adjustments like a traffic cop, facilitating the body’s own healing ability.
